THE SPLIT

Since Prince and I both believed in Jesus, you’d think a come-to-Jesus meeting between the two of us would have been easy to arrange. It wasn’t. Later in his life Prince was eager to talk about Jesus with me—and he did—but at this point open communications with his underlings wasn’t how he operated. He operated in the shadows. I don’t mean he was sinister. I do mean that he was distant. I couldn’t just stroll over to his house and talk about my need to go my own creative way. He set it up so all such discussions went through management. Then management would talk to Prince, who would get back to management, who, in turn, would get back to me. Prince lived his life insulated by buffer zones. In years to come, when everyone had a cell phone, he claimed not to have one. He made it impossible to reach him directly.

Before our post–Purple Rain falling-out, our relationship had already begun to fray. While the two of us were working on Ice Cream Castles, he was living in a Beverly Hills mansion and I was close by at the Westwood Marquis near UCLA. Prince was always running in and out of town and, given our long friendship, gave me carte blanche to drop by whenever I wanted. Sometimes he was there, sometimes not, but I was always made to feel welcome.

On a lonely Los Angeles evening, I was feeling restless and decided to head over to Prince’s and see what was shaking. Rode over in my rented Benz. Top down. Starry sky. Neon night. The city was buzzing.

I was buzzed. Loved that buzz. That buzz brightens all the colors. Chasing the buzz, catching the buzz, watching it slip away, and then chasing it some more. Let’s chase that buzz.

I pulled up to the gate and punched in the magic numbers. The gate slowly opened, allowing me to cruise in and park next to a Rolls Silver Cloud.

Door was unlocked. Party under way. Four of Prince’s sexiest sexies were lounging around the living room.

“Morris is here!” shouted one, all smiles.

“Looking sharp, MD,” said another with an even bigger smile.

I appreciated being appreciated, and when it came to these friendly ladies, I was doing some deep appreciation of my own.

The chitchat was easy, the vibe relaxed, the TV tuned to Prince videos. Since I had long broken up with Jennifer, I was free as a bird. One of the chicks asked me to sit next to her on the couch. Another sat herself down at my feet. Wasn’t sure what would happen next but I felt like I was in the right place at the right time.

Then Prince arrived. The vibe switched up in a second. He stared at me and said, “What are you doing here?”

“Hanging.”

“This isn’t your house to hang in. Get out.”

Just. Like. That.

Man, I was wounded. Didn’t even answer back. At this point we’d been through a lot together. At different times we had even dated the same chicks.
